New Birdo Animation

This year marked the centennial of one of Brazil´s most influential writers, Mario de Andrade. Birdo Studio was hired to direct, animate and do most everything for a film that celebrates Mario´s legacy.

If you´re not from Brazil, I´m pretty sure the film will make no sense whatsoever. But, hey, just watch the pictures moving then. I handled the character animations for the "mad scientist" (who´s supposed to be Mario de Andrade) and for the first bits of the "creature". It was a fun gig, even though animating these sorts of designs on Flash can be a chore sometimes.Cheers!

Four video posts in a row. Wow. It's a new record for this lazy-ass blog.

So, this is the second music video Birdo made for the same band that's mentioned in my previous blog post. This one is called "Pequeno Cidadão", which is also the band's name (it translates to something like "Small Citizen").

I animated some of the scenes in it and drew a couple of the backgrounds. We had to get this done in less than 3 weeks, so it was pretty hectic down at the studio. Fun times!

I´m really proud to have worked on this one. Not only it was a blast to animate a bunch of cute objects dancing, it´s also a beautiful, fun and engaging music video from the minds of Luciana Eguti and Paulo Muppet. I couldn´t be happier with the end results.

Oh, yeah. It´s for a kids-oriented band from Brazil. And the song´s title translates to something like "Daddy´s Little Doll". Have a good day, ladies and gents.

Another ad we animated over at Birdo. It's for a Latin-themed music festival in São Paulo. This one was quite a push, we animated the whole thing in just about 3 days. Drawings were done in Flash, then sent to After Effects for the crayon look and finally printed in a bunch of different sized pieces of paper.

The piece was directed by Dulcidio Caldeira over at ParanoidBR. Animation direction was helmed by my two fine bosses, Paulo Muppet and Luciana Eguti.

Heya.

A few months ago, me and my buddy Graham P. were asked to present a couple of pitches to a network executive. Sadly, our main bet didn't go forward. But it's all good. After all, we got some great industry tips in the process AND got to keep our pitches under the belt to shop around in the future.

So, here's a one-sheet for one of the projects. The idea was born a couple of years ago, back when I was still in Vancouver. It's a sort of nonsensical zombie comedy for kids. Set in a post-apocalyptic suburban town. Inside a dome. Yeah, yeah... it sounds high-concept and all, but it's really about the characters and the gags.

Hopefully one day it'll go forward. We'll keep polishing it until then.

A little while ago I did a quick avatar for Tami, the missus. Of course, my sister got a bit jealous and instantly demanded one for her. It took me a while to get to it, but she's an awesome sister and I had to do it.

I'm happy to be back to work on my personal film after a very long hiatus. The whole thing's been reeboted and I'm almost done with the animatic. Now comes the hard part.

Here's a spot we finished a couple of months ago at Birdo. As always, it was tons of fun. I got to animate some armadillos, birds and, at long last, monkeys. Dancing.

The São Paulo International Film Festival is happening as we speak. This year, they called in awesome graffiti/fine art duo "OSGEMEOS" to draw the poster for the Fest.

Luckily, we at Birdo Studio got a crack at animating this opening vignette. I got to do the biking cycles, the frontal close-up at the beginning and the firecracker being shot. Fun, fun, fun.

Congrats to Amir Admoni, the very talented director of this vignette, and Lu and Paulo, my two trusty animation directors.

My life as a teenage girl

Howdy there. Fresh from Birdo Studio, here's a commercial for "lday pads" or whatever they're called.

Animation was all done in Flash, as usual, and I animated about the first 10 seconds of the girl character and the big cloud of stuff at the end. I had Paulo Muppet's great animatic to work on top and both his and Lu Eguti's direction throughout the thing. It was a joy and I just loved how the whole spot turned out.

Hey folks. Some actual work in here, for a change.

We finished this at the studio a week or two ago it just premiered on MTV this week. It's a music video for a Brazilian artist called Marcelo D2, and he's pretty big over here in these parts.

All the filming was done by Johnny Araujo and the designs/animation by us.

I'm especially happy with how some stuff I did came out, like the 2 devil girls, the TV head, the pink hand coming out of the guy's coat, the alligator, the really quick scenes in the swimming pool and the quick costume changes in the end.

It was a fun gig, very loose and fast. As usual, animation direction was done by Paulo Muppet and Luciana Eguti. Rafael Gallardo and William Yamazi also brought in their animation chops.

So, really great news this past weekend. My short "Papercut" got picked as part of the competitive selection in the Anima Mundi festival.

The reason why I'm so excited is that Anima Mundi is the largest animation festival in Brasil (and, if I'm not mistaken, the whole of Latin America too). And, being a Brazilian myself, this is the festival I've been attending for years. It's where I got exposed to the work of some of my favorite animators. Heck, it's where I first saw "Au Bout Du Monde", one of the best shorts ever made.

I'm really happy and more than humbled to be among all these super-talented animation heroes of mine. Makes me almost want to hide my silly little student film. But hey, they got free cocktails. So I'm definitely attending.

Tonight, I cleaned up on Flash and composited on After FX an old Vancouver Film School assignment. Mainly because the pencil test I had was way too dark, so you could barely see the animation. But also because it's always fun to have something done quickly.

Pull Shapes!

I had to animate some random abstract shapes on Flash for a freelance job. And since most of the time we're animating characters over at the studio, I thought it would be kind of a dull task. Well, it actually was pretty damn fun. You spend pretty much zero time thinking about the drawing itself, and focus solely on timing and shapes and whatnot. It's a neat exercise.

So, this is not the actual finished job. These shapes are going to be composited into a video. This is just me getting some of the work I've done and putting them together just for fun. It's not in any sort of order or nothing.

By the way, I just hate how both the H.264 filter and Youtube make everything washed up. Urgh.

So, here's a quick bumper we did over at Birdo Studio for this Easter commercial.

I did the rough animation and most of the cleanup and shadows. Composting and special-egg-fx was handled by my super-talented boss Luciana Eguti, who was also animation director on the piece along with her bearded partner Paulo Muppet. The character design came straight from the client.

Ok...first of all, I'm really sorry for this. Like, really.

But I recently saw on Cartoon Brew this website that allows you to make these "instant 3D animations". All you have to do is pick the characters and type in the dialogue.

Of course, the final results are hilariously bad. The models are butt-ugly, the stock animation almost non-existent and the deliveries so deadpan that's almost unbearable.

ALMOST. Because I couldn't resist toying with it for 5 minutes and posting the results.

So, just to be clear: I didn't animate this piece of lameness, I just made up the dialogues. Apologies in advance, folks.

Heya there. So, two things. First and foremost, me and my good pal Graham Peterson, a jazzy fella all the way, sent our first pitch ever to the Nickelodeon International Open Mic. It's something we worked on really hard and ultra fast, but I guess we're both proud of and excited about the final product. Even if nothing comes out of this one, I feel like it was a blast just to braistorm some crazy stuff for a kid's show.

And finally, my "Papercut" short (god, it seems so long ago that I did it) got into the Tiburon International Film Festival, in California. Seems like a breezy cool festival, so I wished I was there for some drinks on the beach and a jolly good time. Plenty of thanks to VFS for submitting it.

So, quick post. Days have been crazy between work and a little project me and my good friend Graham (link to your right) are working on.

I just wanted to point out a little vanity link: an animation spotlight with "A Pug´s Life" and myself over at the Aniboom website. Really nice of them. I can´t thank them enough for the attention. Although I think I sound too pompous in some answers. I do, don´t I? Sorry.

Greetings.

So, back at the studio we just finished up this piece here. It's a medical film about the wonders of our immune system. Seem boring, right? Well, the good thing is the client gave us a lot of freedom to make all the "actors" (blood cells, viruses and whatnot) way more cartoony and expressive than what you'd expect from these types of films. So, it turned out to be a very fun job to do.

Designs are mine and the animation was split between me and the mighty Rafael Gallardo. The animation direction was done by the head honchos Paulo Muppet and Lu Eguti. The whole thing was done in Flash.

Oh, the text is all in Portuguese. It mostly explains what's going on inside our awesome bodies. Cheers.
